Extract from ‘Gallipoli’
In a cold steel-grey dawn,
a cutter packed with young boys
glides swiftly, stealthily,
through still black waters
towards Gallipoli beach …

Extract from ‘Banka Island’
But there's to be no surrender!
The twenty-two nurses are now
ordered to walk into the sea ...
The Japanese fire across the line
with a machine-gun ...

One by one,
the women fall into the water
with bullets in their backs ...

Some are still wearing
their Red Cross armbands ...
Remember Them

Lyrics for the Gallipoli section published
in the Poppy Fields Anthology on War (Poetry Now, UK).
