ZION CANYON

Zion Canyon, located in the southern part of Utah, is just a relatively short distance north of Grand Canyon, northern Arizona. The impressively deep red colour of the rock here is rather distinct from that of its large neighbor.

The first time I visited was in the summertime. It was a nice place, but the walks inside the park I thought were a little lacking. In my opinion the more beautiful sights were while driving towards the park.

There was one quite nice walk towards the end of the park, I have a picture of that below.

The second time I visited was nearing wintertime. It had just finished snowing the day before. When we visited, the sun was often out and it was quite a nice temperature.

The views coming into the park were again beautiful, but this time even more so. The light covering of snow allowed the strata of the deep red rock to show through, giving an impressive contrast.

This is just outside the park.

Cacti with snow on top

Just a flora shot that caught my eye at the time. Thinking about it, cacti with snow on top is a little ironic, don't you think?

And to balance things out.. a fauna shot.

This is the walk that I thought was quite nice. About half an hour walking through a gorge, finishing up with a spectacular view at a lookout over Zion Canyon.

You can't really appreciate the value of this photo without being there. Mum is standing, quite bravely, about three feet away from the edge of very, very deep vertical sided ravine.

BRYCE CANYON

I must say that I think Bryce Canyon is most beautiful of the three in this area. The Grand Canyon is certainly impressive due to its size, but the incredible tower formations and orange and cream colour scheme here are what attracts me.

This place affords magical views at any time of the year, but in my opinion, a sprinkling of snow enhances the contrast and beauty.
