After I reached Macay (a little south of Cairns) I took a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef. Although I didn't have a SCUBA divers certificate at the time, the company allowed 'Resort Dives' in which you get a half hour crash course which gives just enough information to be able to breath at 10m under water with the dive instructor supervising close behind. I bought myself one of those little Fuji underwater disposable cameras and recorded some views of the submerged world - sometimes with the help of the dive instructor.
